Target is expanding on the number of dangerous ingredients that they want vendors to remove from their products, increasing pressure on manufacturers to comply with health concerns of consumers.
Some of the ingredients that they aim to remove from the products on their shelves include bisphenol A and coal tars, as well as triclosan, which is a substance found in sanitizer and hand soap that is currently being reviewed by the FDA.
While they are not outlawing any particular products, they are potentially going to spur manufacturers to clean up their products by bringing attention to those that do in stores.
But what is the incentive for Target itself?
Consumers have indicated that they would like more health minded options available, and Target is listening. Products with their ingredients clearly labeled are to be prioritized, hopefully curbing the use of questionable substances.
Additionally, Wal-Mart has also recently made a push to rid their stores of products with dangerous chemicals and require more labeling for the sake of consumers.
Together, as two of the largest retail chains in the United States, they may have enough influence to make a difference in product safety. While you may not look to stores like Target or Wal-Mart for health conscious items, it seems that things are trending in the right direction.
