Giving back to a community in need is a great opportunity—one that Dr. Paul Sussman was fortunate enough to find. Dr. Sussman traveled to the Dominican Republic to offer dental care and procedures to patients who couldn’t afford them.
Several other dentists made the trip with Dr. Sussman this past June as part of a program led by Dr. Leo Malin, an expert in the dental field. Roughly 70 patients were treated within a week, ranging in age from 20 to 70 years old. Together, the dentists in the program placed 134 dental implants.
“It was not only an opportunity to give back, but also an educational program. I worked with, and learned from, many other dentists.”
“It was very gratifying to be able to help people receive dental treatment that would not ordinarily be available to them,” Dr. Sussman said. He also claimed that the experience helped him to further his appreciation of the level of care he and his team provide his patients, and the advanced dental care that isn’t readily available to those in less developed areas. There were smiles all around, and everyone was grateful for the dental care they received.
Even though this was his first service trip, Dr. Sussman plans to do similar work in the future. He would like to continue giving back to communities that lack resources to provide proper dental care.
Dr. Sussman also found that this experience has improved the services he already provides Rochester area patients. “It was not only an opportunity to give back, but also an educational program. I worked with, and learned from, many other dentists,” Dr. Sussman said.
